Corporate Carbon Removal Strategies

SAP and Climeworks Partner to Advance Decarbonization
Georgia Wray Norsten — June 17, 2025SAP and Climeworks have formed a multi-year strategic alliance, securing 37,000 tons of carbon removal credits through 2034 to neutralize SAP’s hard-to-abate emissions. The partnership involves co-innovation to integrate carbon management solutions into SAP’s enterprise software, enabling businesses to measure and offset emissions through SAP’s platforms.
Climeworks will employ direct air capture, biochar, and enhanced weathering methods tailored to SAP’s needs, while adopting SAP’s cloud tools to scale its own operations. SAP’s investment -- part of its Science-Based Targets initiative roadmap -- helps fund Climeworks’ capacity and insulates SAP against future carbon price volatility. Both companies emphasize that integrating high-quality carbon removal into business processes can turn sustainability into an economic opportunity, not just a cost.
This deal exemplifies how large corporations are actively financing carbon removal as a complement to their efforts to reduce emissions. By incorporating carbon offset options into its software offerings, SAP can differentiate its services for clients with net-zero commitments.
