Brenmiller Energy Develops New Tech for Next-Gen Nuclear Reactors
Georgia Wray Norsten — July 12, 2025References: rgj
Brenmiller Energy announced development of a specialized bGen thermal energy storage system designed specifically for nuclear small modular reactors, addressing critical flexibility gaps in next-generation nuclear power infrastructure. The company leveraged its existing thermal energy storage expertise, already validated through installations with major European utility Enel, to create a solution that supports SMR decarbonization with minimal modifications to proven technology. The bGen system's architecture naturally supports passive heat absorption, load following, and decay heat removal, making it ideally suited for integration with nuclear systems that require enhanced safety and operational flexibility.
This innovation comes as governments worldwide accelerate SMR development, with the U.S. Department of Energy issuing $900 million in solicitations and the World Bank reversing its nuclear funding ban to support clean energy transitions. The thermal storage system enables SMRs to meet dynamic grid demands while maintaining baseload generation capabilities, crucial for supporting AI infrastructure and computing demands.
