Biodegradable Cheese Wrappers
Nestlé Debuts a ‘Self-Packaging’ Cheese Wrap from Whey Waste
Georgia Wray Norsten — May 24, 2025Nestlé Central America has launched a biodegradable cheese wrapper made from whey protein, a byproduct of the cheesemaking process. Developed in partnership with Ogilvy Colombia, the material replaces traditional plastic film on '¡Qué Rico!' brand cheese in Panama. The new bioplastic uses polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) derived from whey, offering protective qualities while being compostable.
This innovation addresses two key sustainability goals: reducing dairy production waste and eliminating petroleum-based plastic packaging. The pilot rollout will help Nestlé evaluate commercial viability, packaging performance, and consumer response before potential global expansion. This 'self-packaging' cheese concept positions the product as both environmentally friendly and circular -- using part of the food itself as its wrapper.
This initiative demonstrates Nestlé’s investment in regenerative packaging solutions. It supports waste reduction and brand differentiation while potentially unlocking cost savings and environmental credits. It may also set a precedent for biomaterial use in other food categories.
