Hong Kong Will Launch an Eco-Friendly Pig Farming Project
Georgia Wray Norsten — May 16, 2025Environmentally friendly pig farming is the focus of Hong Kong’s first multi-storey, modernized livestock project, recently announced by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD). Set for a one-hectare site in Sheung Shui, the initiative represents a major step in the city’s transition toward high-tech, sustainable agriculture, aligning with the 2023 Blueprint for the Sustainable Development of Agriculture and Fisheries.
Scheduled to open for applications on May 30, the project emphasizes enclosed, vertical farming systems that reduce land use and environmental impact while enhancing production efficiency. Applicants must submit detailed business proposals covering integration of displaced pig farmers, technical capabilities, and financial strategies. Backed by the 2024 Policy Address, the facility will incorporate advanced automation and environmental safeguards, positioning Hong Kong as a regional model for green livestock operations.
