Potato-Based Clothing Fabrics

Fibe Strives to Make Clothes from Harvest Waste for Sustainability
Colin Smith — July 18, 2025Fibe is a London-based material science company founded by design engineers from Imperial College London, which has developed a proprietary technology to extract natural textile fibers from potato harvest waste, specifically stems and leaves that are otherwise discarded or incinerated. Through a non-toxic, scalable process, the company converts this agricultural by-product into durable, soft fibers compatible with existing spinning and weaving infrastructure, validating its performance by producing the world’s first yarn made entirely from potato waste on standard textile machinery.
The environmental benefits of Fibe’s potato-based fibers include using up to 99.7 percent less water and generating 82 percent fewer carbon emissions than conventional cotton production, without requiring additional land. By establishing transparent supply chains with farmers and compensating them for their waste streams, Fibe not only mitigates resource consumption but also enhances farm profitability and promotes a circular economy model within the textile industry.
