Rugged technology maker RuggON introduced new AI-driven fleet management computers to help waste collection companies cut emissions and costs. Debuted at WasteExpo 2025, the next-gen vehicle-mounted systems provide real-time route optimization, engine diagnostics, and driver safety alerts for garbage trucks. Using these onboard computers, waste haulers can reduce idling, avoid unnecessary trips, and perform predictive maintenance, lowering fuel consumption and carbon footprint.

RuggON’s North America CEO Tim Tsai said the goal is to enable the waste industry’s 'digital transformation while staying aligned with sustainability goals.' The solutions are built to withstand harsh trash-collection environments (shock, vibration, weather) and leverage 5G connectivity to instantly transmit data from the field to dispatch centers.

Waste management fleets often have aging diesel trucks with heavy stop-and-go usage; adding an AI optimization layer can significantly improve efficiency. For waste companies, investing in such technology can lead to savings on fuel and maintenance, helping offset slim profit margins and meet municipal pollution requirements.
