Mattress Recycling Initiatives

Residents of Greater Sudbury Can Now Recycle Mattresses Easily

Starting April 1, residents of Greater Sudbury can rest easy knowing that discarded mattresses will be recycled rather than adding to landfill waste. Under a new initiative, the city will ensure that mattresses, box springs, and futon mattresses—whether picked up from curbsides or dropped off at landfill sites and the Walden small-vehicle transfer station—are diverted for recycling.

This effort aligns with Greater Sudbury’s goal to redirect 90% of solid waste from landfills by 2050, helping to extend the lifespan of waste management infrastructure and promote environmental sustainability. Residents won’t experience any changes in how they dispose of these items; they can still schedule curbside collection through the WasteWise app, online, or by calling 311.

A dedicated vehicle will collect these bulky items separately, and landfill staff will direct those dropping them off to a designated mattress diversion area, ensuring proper processing and recycling. Through this initiative, Greater Sudbury is taking another step toward a greener future.
