Biodegradable Packaging Partnerships

MSU is Working with Chile-Based Bioelements Group
Colin Smith — June 19, 2025Michigan State University's School of Packaging has established a research partnership with Bioelements Group, a Chilean-based company specializing in biodegradable packaging material development. The collaboration aims to assess and validate the biodegradation performance of Bioelements Group’s sustainable formulations, including materials such as the Bio E-8i film. This initiative supports Bioelements Group’s efforts to expand its portfolio in the United States by leveraging MSU’s expertise in packaging research, life-cycle assessments, and material performance evaluations under controlled laboratory conditions.
The project entails conducting comprehensive biodegradation assessments under simulated industrial composting conditions, following established standards such as ISO 14855 for aerobic composting. Researchers at MSU, including faculty with extensive experience in biodegradable studies, are tasked with developing biodegradation profiles and determining the materials' viability in conditions that mimic real-world waste management environments. The results from these validation assessments are expected to contribute to the optimization of sustainable packaging solutions and provide critical data to support the reduction of long-term plastic pollution.
