Food-Waste-Targeting Community Efforts

Food Cycle Science Partners with Newfoundland Communities

Newfoundland communities are taking action on food waste by partnering with Food Cycle Science (FCS), a Canadian clean-tech company. Since there’s no green bin system on the island, five towns—Gander, Corner Brook, Pasadena, Conception Bay South, and Portugal Cove–St. Philip’s—have started new food waste diversion programs using the 'FoodCycler®.'

This small kitchen appliance turns food scraps into a dry, shelf-stable material that’s easy to store, transport, or reuse. Instead of throwing leftovers into the garbage, households can now reduce food waste right at home.

By using this technology, communities are cutting down on the amount of waste sent to landfills and reducing the costs and emissions linked to hauling garbage long distances. This partnership shows that rural and remote areas can lead the way in sustainability by adopting practical, high-tech solutions—without needing large, expensive infrastructure.
