A new global marine initiative called 'Revive Our Ocean' was unveiled, aimed at helping coastal communities establish marine protected areas and achieve the '30 by 30' ocean conservation target by 2030. Led by NGO Dynamic Planet and National Geographic’s Pristine Seas program, the project will initially focus on tackling overfishing and climate impacts in seven countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico and the UK.

Organizers highlight that creating marine reserves can boost fish stocks and tourism, bringing economic benefits alongside ecosystem recovery. With fewer than 12% of oceans currently protected, Revive Our Ocean is rallying support to rapidly expand conservation zones. The launch coincides with UN meetings on a global ocean treaty, underscoring urgency to safeguard marine biodiversity.

Expanding marine protected areas can spur the blue economy by enhancing fisheries and eco-tourism income for coastal communities. This initiative signals growing public-private collaboration in conservation financing.
