Sustainable Energy Research Efforts

Rice and ExxonMobil Sign a Master Research Agreement
Debra John — April 15, 2025Rice and ExxonMobil have partnered to advance research focused on sustainable energy solutions. This new collaboration reflects their shared commitment to addressing major global challenges such as climate change, environmental protection, and the transition to cleaner energy. Based in Houston, both institutions are well-positioned to contribute through their combined expertise and location in the world’s energy capital.
Rice University brings strengths in materials science, chemistry, high-performance computing, and applied mathematics, which will support the development of innovative energy technologies. Together, Rice and ExxonMobil aim to create practical, science-based solutions that promote a more sustainable energy future.
Their first joint project is already in progress; led by Professor Qilin Li, the research focuses on developing advanced methods to treat and reuse water from oil and gas production. This project supports environmental goals by reducing water waste and creating cleaner processes for the energy industry.
