Sustainable Sawdust-Based Glazes

Studio Peipei Repurposes Sawdust for Every Type of Stone
Debra John — April 12, 2025Studio Peipei, a German material design studio, has developed a sustainable glaze made from recycled sawdust, adaptable to nearly all types of natural stone. After three years of dedicated research and refinement, the team "successfully eliminated the need for traditional additives such as quartz sand and metal oxides by leveraging the natural quartz content already present in stone."
This innovative glaze is certified for use on tiles and everyday objects and adjusts seamlessly to variations in clay types, mixing ratios, and production methods. The result is a wide range of textures, colors, and finishes that embrace the unique qualities of each stone batch, offering both visual richness and functional durability.
In addition to its performance, the glaze is presented in eco-friendly packaging. Test bags are made from uncoated, 100% recycled paper and incorporate stone dust residue, while the labels are printed on surplus stock from local printing companies.
