The City of Brampton has taken a significant step in promoting sustainable food systems by endorsing the 'Plant Based Treaty,' becoming the first municipality in Ontario to do so. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to reducing emissions and addressing climate change through environmentally conscious food strategies. By advocating for plant-based diets, Brampton aims to "lower its consumption-based carbon footprint while contributing to global efforts to restore ecosystems and limit global warming to 1.5°C."

The transition to plant-based food options offers numerous ecological benefits. These include reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with "meat and dairy production, conserving water, and minimizing deforestation; as part of the initiative, Brampton will increase plant-based food options at municipal facilities and events, host awareness campaigns on sustainable eating, and promote the health and environmental advantages of plant-based diets." These efforts collectively aim to create a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
