Algae-Based Beverage Labels
Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Beverages Utilizes Algae Black Packaging
Debra John — March 3, 2026Algae-based beverage labels have been commercialized by Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Beverages as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable packaging innovation. Following five years of research and development conducted in collaboration with strategic partners, the brand has implemented labels printed with ACTExact® UV Black Algae Ink. This ink utilizes carbon-negative, algae-derived pigment as an alternative to conventional petroleum-based black inks.
The initiative was made possible through a partnership with Living Ink Technologies, ACTEGA, and NextGen Label Group™, resulting in what is described as "the first large-scale commercial application of this specific algae-based ink technology within the beverage sector." By replacing traditional carbon black pigments, the solution seeks to reduce reliance on fossil fuel–derived materials in packaging components.
For Waiakea, the adoption of algae-based ink represents a continuation of its broader sustainability strategy. The company previously commercialized 100% post-consumer recycled PET bottles in North America and introduced its OceanPlast™ bottle, aimed at increasing the diversion of ocean-bound plastic waste.
