Ethically-Sourced Handwoven Apparel

Norlha Utilizes Yak Khullu for Ready-to-Wear Clothing
Debra John — April 16, 2025Norlha is a pioneering textile atelier established in 2007 by Kim and Dechen Yeshi on the Tibetan Plateau, specializing in ethically-sourced, handwoven apparel made from yak khullu. As the first of its kind in the region, Norlha transforms the traditional skills of former nomadic herders—who have spun, woven, and felted for generations—into high-quality, ready-to-wear garments that honor both cultural heritage and contemporary design.
Yak khullu, the soft, insulating undercoat naturally shed by yaks in early summer, is at the heart of Norlha’s creations. Revered for its exceptional warmth, durability, and luxurious texture, khullu is a naturally ethical fiber that supports sustainable harvesting without harm to the animals. By harmonizing traditional craftsmanship with selective modern technologies, Norlha produces timeless clothing that upholds environmental responsibility while fostering economic opportunity and community development on the plateau.
