Researchers at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates patented a new carbon capture technology that uses a blend of spent coffee grounds, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging waste and potassium hydroxide as an activating agent to capture carbon dioxide from industrial processes before it is released into the atmosphere. This low-cost carbon capture technology has the potential to reduce environmental pollution, industrial emissions, support sustainable waste management and could be used in water and air purification. “This invention repurposes two abundant waste streams—coffee and plastic—into a high-performance adsorbent,” detailed Lead Inventor Dr. Aljomard, “The resulting activated carbon shows strong potential for capturing carbon dioxide from fossil fuel-based energy systems, contributing to the reduction of air pollution.”
