Aidan Dwyer Discovers That Solar Panels Can Be Elevated in Winter
Kanesa D — September 23, 2025A 13-year-old student from New York has discovered that mimicking nature could make solar panels significantly more efficient in winter. Aidan Dwyer noticed that trees arrange their branches and leaves using the Fibonacci sequence, a pattern that may help them capture sunlight more effectively.
To test his idea, he built two solar setups in his backyard. One mimicked a tree with spiraling “branches” that held small panels, while the other used standard, flat panels. During winter, the tree-inspired design captured almost 50% more energy than traditional panels, showing that nature’s blueprint could improve solar power efficiency.
Dwyer's research suggests that rearranging solar panels can help improve winter efficiency without the need for new technological innovations within the solar power industry.
