Circular Solar Panel Projects

ENGIE Partnered with SOLARCYCLE on 'Precycle' Project
Colin Smith — June 20, 2025ENGIE and SOLARCYCLE have established an innovative "precycling" partnership aimed at integrating circular economy principles into the early stages of solar project development. The collaboration mandates that recycling measures be embedded into the contracts and project planning processes, particularly within power purchase agreements, so that solar panels and associated components are designed for full lifecycle recovery. This approach is intended to ensure traceability and to support the efficient recycling of these components once they reach the end of their operational life, thereby aligning project development with sustainability and circularity objectives.
Under the terms of the agreement, the partnership targets the incorporation of recycling provisions into pilot projects totaling 375 megawatts of solar capacity in the United States. This initiative is expected to facilitate the recycling of nearly one million panels, with industry estimates suggesting that approximately 48 million pounds of material could be diverted from landfills and around 33,000 tons of carbon emissions may be avoided over the lifecycle of the projects. The precycling strategy reflects a proactive shift in renewable energy project development, moving beyond conventional waste management practices toward an integrated approach that supports both environmental and supply chain sustainability in the clean energy sector.
