Boral Limited's Recycled Glass is To Be Used for Sydney Water
Kanesa D — August 7, 2025A new type of construction sand made partly from recycled glass has just received the green light for use in Sydney Water projects. Developed by building materials company Boral Limited, the product is a blended compaction sand that mixes regular natural sand with up to 40% recycled glass sand and is sourced from curbside-collected glass bottles.
This innovative blend was engineered to meet Sydney Water’s strict performance standards, particularly for underground pipe installations.
The Upper South Creek Advanced Water Recycling Centre—Sydney Water’s largest project to date in Western Sydney—has become the first to officially adopt this new sand. By using Boral’s High-Grade Compaction Sand (HGCS), the project is setting a precedent for smarter, greener infrastructure development that puts recycled materials to work in meaningful ways.
