British Steel & University of Sheffield Launch a New Pilot Project

British Steel has started a carbon capture trial at its Scunthorpe plant, deploying a mobile capture unit developed by the University of Sheffield. This pilot project focuses on capturing carbon dioxide emissions from the flue gases at the site’s Central Power Station. Once captured, the CO₂ will be transported to the university, where it will be used as a feedstock for synthetic fuels, showcasing a potential pathway for the reutilization of captured carbon.
According to Dr. Andy Trowsdale, British Steel’s Head of Research and Development, this project aims to test and refine the technology’s effectiveness. If successful, this method could be a scalable solution for British Steel and other heavy industries to mitigate emissions, integrating carbon capture as part of a broader decarbonization strategy.
The initiative is one of many carbon capture projects underway in the UK, underscoring the country’s significant investment in carbon reduction technologies as it pursues net-zero targets.
