Compact Versatile Painting Studios

Ballman Khapalova's compact structure is designed to function as a painting studio and office for an artist. The projject occupies a property with an existing farmhouse, and its construction repurposed the foundation of a previous outbuilding.

The new compact structure is situated on a sloped parcel of land, with its roofline conforming to the natural grade of the site. A key architectural feature of the studio is the integration of large windows, which deliver ample natural illumination for artistic work while maintaining visual privacy from adjacent properties. For the interior, Ballman Khapalova utilized durable, unfinished plywood for both the flooring and walls, and incorporated a double-height storage area. The design emphasizes a connection to the surrounding landscape, with interior spaces oriented towards views of the yard and a distant river.
