Corporate Biochar Deals

Microsoft has signed a 10-year agreement with Bolivian climate tech company Exomad Green to remove 1.24 million tons of CO₂ using biochar -- making it the largest corporate biochar deal on record. Biochar, a charcoal-like material produced by pyrolyzing agricultural waste, permanently stores carbon in soil for centuries.

Under the partnership, Exomad will scale biochar production across multiple new sites, building on a prior Microsoft pilot from 2023. The initiative also includes social impact goals: Exomad intends to improve the livelihoods of over 250,000 people in Bolivia's Amazon basin. Microsoft will receive carbon credits verified by Puro.earth and tracked through Carbonfuture. The credits contribute toward Microsoft's commitment to become carbon-negative by 2030 and to remove all historical emissions by 2050.

This agreement also supports ecosystem regeneration and sustainable agriculture while fostering the growth of emerging carbon removal markets.
