Saeed Khalfan Al Ghafri, the CEO of Emirates Steel, a subsidiary of the Emsteel Group, has confirmed its plans to launch low-carbon iron in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Japanese partners. As industries and consumers increasingly prioritize environmental sustainability, the demand for low-carbon and green solutions is rising, making this collaboration significant in all aspects.
Al Ghafri also highlighted the Green Iron project, which aims to utilize hydrogen as a clean energy source for iron production—a significant departure from traditional methods that rely on carbon-intensive processes. According to Al Ghafri, the project is currently in the feasibility study phase, and while progress is being made, full-scale commercial production is not expected before 2027.
Emirates Steel's work in carbon capture has led the company to achieve a capture rate of 800,000 tonnes annually, which it then repurposes for oil well injection.
