The Environmental Center development in Lancaster City took a major step forward as the Lancaster City Council unanimously approved a 99-year ground lease agreement with Partners for Environmental Stewardship. The agreement grants the organization use of approximately nine acres on the Sunnyside Peninsula for the creation of the facility.

This milestone advances the vision outlined in the 'City’s 2023 Comprehensive Plan,' which calls for transforming the northern portion of the Sunnyside Peninsula—located in southeast Lancaster City—into the City’s first nature preserve. The Environmental Center will serve as a focal point for reconnecting the community with the Conestoga River, while promoting environmental education and stewardship.

The project is intended to position Lancaster as a regional leader in clean water initiatives, ecological awareness, and sustainable waterfront development, offering lasting environmental, recreational, and cultural benefits for residents and visitors alike.
