BUTEX Hosted ICFP 2025 to Focus on Textile Innovations
Colin Smith — August 28, 2025The International Conference on Fibres and Polymers (ICFP) 2025 commenced on August 26 in Dhaka as a two-day forum hosted by the Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) in collaboration with the Society of Fibre Science, Bangladesh, and the International Standard University (ISU). The event convened researchers, academic stakeholders, and industry experts to explore sustainable innovation in both textile and polymer sectors. During the inauguration, Professor Dr MA Barik, President of the Society of Fibre Science and a faculty member at Shizuoka University, emphasized the need to integrate global research standards with local industry requirements to position Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Key presentations by Dr Takeshi Kikutani, former President of the Japan Fibre Society, and Professor Carolyn L Shawer, President of the US Fibre Society, underscored Bangladesh’s opportunity to move beyond high-volume manufacturing toward high-value innovation through eco-friendly fibres, circular technologies, and interdisciplinary applications in healthcare, environmental remediation, and renewable energy. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Julhas Uddin highlighted the importance of sustained academic-industry partnerships, particularly with technologically advanced nations such as Japan, to foster research linkages and commercialize solutions. The conference agenda included sessions on recycled and sustainable fibres, nano- and electronic textiles, polymer engineering, and Industry 4.0 applications, with organizers projecting that ICFP 2025 will drive policy development, product design innovation, and long-term international collaboration to advance a sustainable textile-polymer ecosystem in Bangladesh.
