Lightweight Glass Wine Bottles

Margaret River Wine Association's Initiative Reduces Emissions

The Margaret River Wine Association (MRWA) is officially unveiling its Lightweight Glass Packaging Charter, offering a unique response to the increase in environmental issues. Tihs solution swaps the traditional glass packaging used for wine for a lightweight glass that contributes to a 20% reduction in carbon emissions. The charter has already receieved statements of intent from 10 wineries, and is currently working with names like Pierro Wines, Evans & Tate, and La Kooki.

“Even small changes can have a big impact,” said MRWA Sustainability Officer Kate Morgan. “Just by making wine bottles lighter, we could save enough glass to equal the weight of the Sydney Opera House roof.”

The company hopes that as information becomes more accessible to the average consumer that perceptions regarding the heaviness of the glass bottle a wine is packaged in begin to shift.
