Eco-Friendly Government Headquarters
Nexus Terrae will Design a Government Building for Italy
Debra John — November 28, 2025Nexus Terrae has been selected to design the new headquarters of Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security in Rome’s EUR district, establishing a model for environmentally responsible government architecture. The building is conceived as energy positive, supported by a timber-framed structural system that significantly reduces embodied carbon compared to conventional construction methods.
A publicly accessible ground floor integrates indoor and outdoor landscapes, enhancing biodiversity and promoting biophilic engagement for visitors and staff. At the center of the design, a vertically oriented atrium introduces daylight and vegetation throughout the building, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and supporting natural ventilation strategies. Suspended terraces within the atrium provide flexible workspaces while maintaining open visual connections.
The rooftop features a timber canopy equipped with high-efficiency photovoltaic panels, enabling the building to generate more renewable energy than it consumes annually, reinforcing Italy’s commitment to low-impact, future-ready public infrastructure.
