NRCan Invested $6 Million CAD in Ontario Green Developments
Colin Smith — June 25, 2025Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is investing CAD $6 million in four Ontario projects through its Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) and Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) programs. Funding recipients include Assembly Corp. (≈ CAD 900 000 for a seismic system in an eight-storey, 62-unit all-wood building in Toronto), Sean Mason Homes (CAD 1 million for a five-storey, 38-unit cross-laminated timber and geothermal condominium in Barrie), Post Office Limited Partnership (CAD 1 million to add nine storeys and 219 rental units to a heritage post office in Oshawa using sustainable wood), and Timmerman Timberworks (over CAD 3 million to develop Canada’s first automated nail-laminated timber production line). These initiatives are expected to yield more than 300 housing units while advancing mass timber applications.
The investment emphasizes scalable, prefabricated wood components to shorten construction timelines and lower carbon emissions. NRCan cites the projects’ potential to bolster forestry-sector employment, strengthen local economies, and support Canada’s housing and environmental targets by integrating low-carbon Canadian wood into mid-rise and high-density residential developments.
