Origami Packaging Tech is Alternative to Plastic Protective Packs
Georgia Wray Norsten — January 10, 2025Origami packaging tech, developed through a collaboration between Finland’s VTT Technical Research Centre and Aalto University, offers an innovative alternative to traditional protective packaging. Inspired by origami’s intricate folds, the FOLD project has created a continuous reel-to-reel process for shaping cardboard into lightweight, durable, and visually appealing structures, providing a sustainable substitute for plastic and polystyrene.
This groundbreaking technology replicates hand-folding with mechanical precision, eliminating the time-intensive nature of traditional origami. Applicable to various paperboard grades without altering materials, it combines sustainability with cost-efficiency. The packaging’s versatility and aesthetic appeal have already piqued interest from industries such as e-commerce, cosmetics, and food.
Supported by partners like Stora Enso and Lumene, the project is advancing towards commercialization, aiming to introduce origami cardboard packaging within 3-5 years.
