Cucumbers are often wrapped in plastic to extend their shelf life by reducing moisture loss and spoilage, and Swedish food-tech company Saveggy developed plastic-free cucumber packaging that's not only waste-reducing but edible. The plant-based packaging wrap is made from just two simple ingredients, rapeseed oil and gluten-free oat oil, and protects the vegetable while also keeping the cucumber fresh for up to two weeks to effectively rival its widely adopted plastic counterpart.

"Cucumbers highlight the challenge: food waste on one side, plastic-wrapped shelves on the other," expressed Arash Fayyazi, co-founder of Saveggy, "Our goal is to reduce food waste and plastic pollution together—with respect for nature, people, and the resources that make our food possible.”
