MGM China Transforms Casino Waste into Sustainable Packaging
Georgia Wray Norsten — April 4, 2025MGM China's playing card recycling solution significantly advances sustainable practices within the casino and hospitality industry. In collaboration with local tech innovator Fnetlink Technology Company Limited, MGM has introduced an eco-friendly system that repurposes approximately 3,000 tons of used playing cards each year into recyclable packaging materials -- eliminating waste and supporting Macau's green transformation.
The initiative includes an innovative, automated shredding process that minimizes occupational hazards while significantly cutting carbon emissions by processing cards locally rather than exporting waste. Uniquely, the method avoids water use; instead, shredded cards are converted into high-quality fibers that are transformed into eco-friendly packaging. This closed-loop system reinforces the principles of the circular economy and aligns with China's national carbon neutrality objectives.
MGM is setting a new standard for environmental responsibility in integrated resorts by pioneering the first fully localized card recycling system in Macau. The partnership showcases how innovation and sustainability can support regional decarbonization goals and drive economic diversification.
