The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has partnered with Strategic Materials, Inc. (SMI), the largest glass recycler in North America, to advance sustainable packaging solutions in the luxury cosmetics industry. This collaboration, which spans multiple years, focuses on improving the recyclability of cosmetic glass packaging while maintaining the aesthetic and functional standards expected in luxury products. Together, ELC and SMI have conducted extensive testing on over 200 glass beauty containers to identify barriers to recyclability, such as the use of decorative elements and complex color formats. The findings from these studies aim to guide designers, developers, and suppliers in creating packaging that aligns with circular economy principles.

In addition to addressing design challenges, the partnership emphasizes the importance of enhancing the quality and availability of post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass. By improving contamination rates and ensuring a cleaner stream of recyclable materials, ELC and SMI seek to increase the amount of high-quality recycled glass that can be reintegrated into new packaging. This initiative is part of ELC's broader sustainability goals, which include achieving 75% to 100% recyclable, refillable, reusable, or recoverable packaging by 2025. Through this partnership, ELC demonstrates its commitment to reducing environmental impact while setting a precedent for sustainable innovation in the cosmetics industry.
