Co-op has teamed up with Podback to launch a six-month trial of in-store coffee pod recycling at 33 locations, marking a significant step toward more sustainable shopping practices. As part of the initiative, Podback-branded recycling units will be installed in 30 Co-op stores across southwest England, as well as in the retailer’s three sustainability showcase stores in Leeds, Soham, and Northampton. Shoppers can easily locate participating stores using Podback’s online Recycle Checker tool.

The trial accepts both plastic and aluminium coffee pods from Podback’s member brands. Customers place their used pods into the specially branded recycling bags and drop them off at designated in-store collection points. This convenient system allows shoppers to take immediate action to reduce waste, while Co-op and Podback assess the effectiveness of expanding coffee pod recycling on a broader scale.

"We're delighted to be partnering with Podba. Recycling is a topic that our member-owners are extremely passionate about and this new trial is another way we can make it easier for our customers to do the right thing for the planet when shopping in our stores," said Scott McHarg, Head of Co-op & Property Sustainability.
