Compostable Pet Food Bowls

An Entrepreneur Founded Poe's Plates to Reduce Impact of Pet Dishes
Colin Smith — July 25, 2025Poe’s Plates is a pet‐accessory venture founded by a Kenilworth entrepreneur that offers molded‐fiber feeding dishes designed specifically for cats and small dogs. Each plate is produced from agricultural byproducts—primarily wheat straw fiber—and formed into a durable, dishwasher‐safe bowl with integrated silicone feet to prevent sliding. The dishes are available in several sizes and shapes, and were launched via a Kickstarter campaign in mid-2025 to fund initial production and gauge market demand among eco-conscious pet owners.
From a sustainability perspective, Poe’s Plates bowls are fully compostable in municipal or home composting systems, breaking down into natural organic matter within six to eight weeks. By utilizing wheat straw—a non-food agricultural residue—as the primary material, the company diverts waste from landfills and reduces reliance on petroleum-based plastics. The manufacturing process avoids added PFAS or other chemical coatings, and local partnering with East Coast molders minimizes transportation emissions, aligning the product with circular-economy principles and low-impact pet care practices.
