Recycled Potato Bags

Shoprite is setting a new benchmark in sustainable retail with the launch of its fully recyclable potato bag, a practical, eco-conscious solution designed to simplify green shopping for millions of South Africans. Rolling out across more than 1,400 Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave stores nationwide from May 2025, this innovation demonstrates the country's shift towards sustainable practices and business operations.

To come up with this innovative packaging product, five Shoprite employees, enrolled in a leadership programme with the Gordon Institute of Business Science, were challenged to design a more sustainable alternative to the conventional plastic potato bag. Collaborating with international paper specialists, they developed a locally viable, paper-based solution that aligns with South Africa’s current recycling infrastructure — no costly upgrades required.
