Sustainable Turkey Packaging

Amcor, a global packaging leader, has unveiled a revolutionary shrink bag for Butterball turkey products that reduces plastic use and enhances efficiency. The new 'Perflex® shrink bag' incorporates a built-in carrying handle, eliminating the need for the separate plastic netting traditionally used to hold and carry turkeys. By removing the extra net, the package material is reduced, resulting in a 22% smaller carbon footprint and similar reductions in water use and energy consumption during production, according to Amcor’s life-cycle data.

The design also streamlines Butterball’s processing by automating handling (no manual netting). This marks the first such innovation in the category and reflects Amcor’s push toward more recyclable mono-material packaging. The shrink bags are compatible with existing recycling streams where available, and maintain product protection and shelf appeal while using less material.
