South Korea Sets a Mandate to Support Sustainable Travel
Debra John — September 20, 2025South Korea has announced a major policy shift to support sustainable travel by requiring the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on all international flights departing from its airports beginning in 2027. The initiative is part of the country’s long-term climate strategy to reduce emissions in aviation, one of the fastest-growing sources of carbon output worldwide. By setting clear targets, South Korea seeks to lessen the environmental footprint of air travel while advancing its role as a regional leader in sustainable transportation.
SAF is produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil, waste byproducts, and other bio-based materials. Compared with conventional jet fuel, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%. The mandate will begin with "a 1% SAF requirement in 2027, increase to 3–5% by 2030, and reach 7–10% by 2035, significantly advancing decarbonization efforts in aviation."
