The City of Taunton is Implementing a New Solar Energy Initiative
Colin Smith — May 23, 2025The City of Taunton has recently completed its second solar energy project, located at the Charles J. Rocheleau Water Treatment Plant. This project builds on the success of the city’s first solar installation at Chamberlain Elementary School and is part of an ongoing initiative to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The installation is designed to offset energy costs at the water treatment plant while contributing to the city’s broader sustainability objectives. The project reflects Taunton’s commitment to integrating renewable energy solutions into its municipal infrastructure.
The implementation of this solar array was achieved through a collaborative effort involving the Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant, energy consultants, and construction partners, including representatives from Arch Energy. City officials, including Mayor Shaunna O’Connell, have highlighted the financial and environmental benefits of adopting renewable energy sources, noting the potential for long-term cost savings and reduced reliance on traditional power sources. Future projects are planned for additional municipal sites, such as the Taunton Public Library and a former landfill, indicating a strategic expansion of the city’s renewable energy portfolio.
