TFC Recycling has broadened its accepted materials list to now include paper-based drink carriers, cups, and food containers—such as those commonly used for coffee, soda, and soup—marking a progressive step in streamlining waste diversion efforts across several Virginia communities.

Serving cities including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Poquoson, Williamsburg, and the counties of York and James City, TFC’s updated guidelines encourage residents to recycle these items, provided they are clean, dry, and free of any non-paper components like plastic lids or stirrers.

This expansion is made possible by a strategic grant from the Foodservice Packaging Institute and industry partners, which supported the implementation of advanced artificial intelligence-powered sorting technology at TFC facilities. The enhanced system boosts the facility’s ability to identify and process a wider variety of paper-based packaging.
