Solar Textile Pavilions
The Umbra Pavilion Uses Solar-Woven Fabric to Power Public Gathering
Amy Duong — October 23, 2025The Umbra pavilion by Pauline van Dongen integrates photovoltaic yarns into textile walls that harvest solar energy while providing shade and shelter. The lightweight structure frames a day-lit communal space where the textile envelope captures sunlight and converts it into electricity for lighting and digital amenities. It reflects van Dongen’s ongoing interest in material innovation at the intersection of craft, technology, and environment.
By treating textile as both skin and energy systems, the pavilion explores how everyday surfaces can become active infrastructure rather than passive backdrops. The woven modules are arranged to promote airflow and diffuse heat, supporting comfort alongside function. This approach emphasises adaptability and visual quality as much as efficiency and output. The pavilion offers a prototype for architecture that responds to its climate and users with subtle intelligence and quiet elegance.
