Urban Growers Collective Turns Christmas Trees into Snacks for Goats

Urban Growers Collective is accepting decoration-free Christmas tree donations through January 11 at its South Chicago farm to feed their 15 Nigerian Pygmy goats. This eco-friendly initiative reduces waste and provides a healthy snack packed with vitamins A and C, supporting the goats’ digestive health.

Pine trees, including their bark, branches, and leaves, are a nutritious and parasite-free treat for goats. Approximately 15 million Christmas trees end up in landfills each year, making Urban Growers Collective’s program a sustainable alternative.

Donated trees must be free of decorations, hooks, and tinsel, and cannot be sprayed with fire retardant, which is harmful to goats. Donations can be dropped off at 9001 S. Mackinaw Ave. from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. or left at the front gate after hours. This unique initiative highlights creative ways to repurpose holiday waste while supporting local urban farming efforts.
