Vaulted Deep x Microsoft Partner to Remove Carbon
Debra John — July 18, 2025Vaulted Deep x Microsoft have partnered on a long-term agreement to "remove up to 4.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by 2038." Vaulted Deep, a waste management company, will use its proven method of storing carbon-rich organic waste deep underground to help Microsoft meet its climate goals.
The process involves taking waste materials like food scraps, manure, paper sludge, and biosolids—waste that can’t be reused—and injecting them thousands of feet below the surface into stable rock formations. These underground layers are sealed by natural rock, preventing leaks and ensuring the carbon stays buried permanently.
This approach not only removes carbon from the atmosphere but also reduces methane emissions and keeps harmful pollutants like PFAS out of local soil and water. Moreover, the partnership allows Vaulted to expand its carbon removal work across the United States.
