Modern Wooden Church Designs
Dinesen Partners with Julius Nielsen on a Project
Kalin Ned — September 15, 2025The Danish wood manufacturer Dinesen has partnered with architect Julius Nielsen to construct a small, twelve-sided wooden church in Copenhagen's North Harbour district.
The structure is notable for its minimalist approach and absence of traditional religious iconography. Instead, the wooden church derives its character from its geometric form, the extensive use of Douglas fir wood for interior surfaces and furnishings, and a central skylight that emphasizes natural illumination.
A key aspect of the project is its sustainability credentials, achieved through a timber-based construction that results in a very low verified carbon footprint. The design prioritizes flexibility and a minimal physical impact, as the building is elevated on piles to avoid excavation and is conceived to be potentially relocatable. Both the architect and the brand representative have framed the project as a continuation of a legacy.
