VUILD introduces the Fukushima United stadium as a groundbreaking example of timber construction and regenerative design. Planned as Japan’s first fully wooden football arena, it will be built entirely from locally sourced wood with components designed for full disassembly and recycling. Inspired by the Shikinen Sengu ritual of shrine renewal, the project blends community involvement with sustainability. Passive climate systems, seasonal snow storage, and rainwater harvesting ensure efficient cooling, heating, and water reuse, reducing the stadium’s environmental footprint.

More than a sports facility, the design emphasizes resilience, education, and cultural participation. Local residents and fans are invited to take part in the building process, reinforcing its role as a community hub. Targeting the rigorous Living Building Challenge certification, the Fukushima United Stadium aims for energy self-sufficiency while setting a precedent for future large-scale wooden architecture in Japan.
