Cleanfarms Launches a Pilot to Recycle Agricultural Plastics
Georgia Wray Norsten — May 29, 2025Canadian non-profit Cleanfarms, in partnership with the Fraser Valley Regional District and British Columbia’s Ministry of Agriculture, has launched a five-year pilot program (2025–2029) to help farmers in BC’s Fraser Valley recycle used agricultural plastics. The pilot will focus on collecting and recycling bale wrap and silage plastics, which are widely used on farms but often landfilled or burned. The initiative builds on smaller-scale pilots in Northern BC and a local program in Agassiz, expanding support with $188,000 in funding.
Through the program, farmers will compact and store plastic film waste on-farm and participate in twice-yearly drop-off events. The collected plastics will then be sent for proper recycling. Cleanfarms will use the pilot to refine logistics and gather data to develop a permanent province-wide recycling solution for agricultural plastics.
