Sri Lankan Recycling Models

Sri Lanka has taken a major step toward reducing plastic waste with the launch of GP Certified, the country’s first quality certification for recycled plastics. Introduced by Island Climate Initiative (ICI), this program encourages businesses—especially FMCG brands—to use high-quality recycled plastics in their packaging, cutting down on plastic pollution and reducing reliance on imported virgin plastic.

Currently, only 4% of Sri Lanka’s plastic waste is recycled, with most of it ending up in landfills, being burned, or polluting the ocean. GP Certified sets clear guidelines for recyclers, ensuring that plastics are processed safely and responsibly. This gives companies confidence in using recycled materials, helping to build a greener, more sustainable economy while keeping plastic waste out of the environment.
