Japan Airlines Completes Aviation Carbon Credits Retirement
Adam Harrie — April 1, 2026Japan Airlines has completed a large-scale use of aviation carbon credits under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), marking a step in the rollout of the global framework.
The transaction involved the retirement of 180,000 Gold Standard carbon credits to address emissions from international flights. The credits were sourced from projects in Malawi and Tanzania focused on energy conservation and cleaner technologies. Under CORSIA, airlines are required to manage emissions growth by using eligible carbon credits, alongside efforts to improve fuel efficiency and explore alternative energy sources.
As the framework is implemented, activities like this show how carbon credit systems are being applied in practice as part of broader efforts to manage aviation-related CO2 emissions.
