Circular Plant Pot Designs

Biodegradable Pots is a New Project Crafting Plastic-Free Plant Pots

Biodegradable Pots is a novel material research initiative that addresses one of horticulture’s most major sustainability challenges: the heavy reliance on single-use plastic containers. Designed as an alternative to conventional plastic pots, the project supports the principles of responsible production and consumption.

The research explores how organic waste—such as discarded plant fibers from floriculture, food byproducts like eggshells from restaurants, and wood waste, including sawdust from carpentry shops—can be repurposed into biodegradable plant containers.

Led by designer Adonis Evangelista under the supervision of Lígia Lopes, the project prioritized performance as much as sustainability. Each prototype was tested for strength, durability, drainage, and plant compatibility, using natural binders that support healthy plant growth and degrade over time.
