Carbon Cell Launches a New Alternative to Polystyrene Packaging

British company Carbon Cell has developed a carbon-negative, compostable alternative to polystyrene packaging and insulation, made entirely from agricultural waste. The lightweight, rigid foam looks similar to traditional expanded polystyrene but in a striking black hue and contains no plastics.

Produced from biochar—the carbon-rich residue of pyrolyzed crop waste—the material is renewable, sequesters carbon, and continues storing it even after disposal. Carbon Cell estimates that each kilogram of foam removes two kilograms of CO₂ from the atmosphere, transforming a highly polluting product category into a climate-positive solution.

"On our way to achieving this, we are also preparing variations for use in acoustic panelling, interior design, thermal packaging, automotive composites, plant pots and even the film, TV and theatre industries, where lots of foam is used for scenery and props development," said scientist Elizabeth Lee.
