Sustainable AI-Focused Coalitions

A New Sustainability Coalition Targets AI Use Impacts
Colin Smith — May 15, 2025The Coalition for Sustainable Artificial Intelligence is an international, multi-stakeholder initiative established to align the development and implementation of artificial intelligence with environmental sustainability goals. Initiated by France in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Coalition brings together governments, academia, industry, and civil society to promote responsible AI practices. Its membership includes over 100 partners—spanning technology companies, national governments, and international organizations—who have endorsed a shared commitment to mitigating the ecological impacts of AI while leveraging its potential to support sustainable development.
The Coalition is focused on advancing concrete initiatives that establish standardized methods, metrics, and life cycle analysis frameworks to measure and reduce the environmental footprint of AI technologies. These initiatives aim to ensure greater transparency in AI deployment and to drive improvements in energy efficiency, decarbonization, and resource management across the AI value chain. By fostering a collaborative global dialogue, the Coalition seeks to integrate environmental considerations into AI research, development, and operational practices, thereby supporting the broader objective of ensuring that AI contributes positively to global sustainability targets.
